Everything You Need to Know About our Courses

Class Format:

Most courses are low ratio – with maximums ranging from 6 to 12 students per class – and include classes that are 1 – 1.5 hours in length.

NOTE: We often run long to give us time to finish a discussion or to facilitate off-topic community building at the end of class. Please try not to have another class that starts immediately at the end time of one of our classes.

The course times are listed in EASTERN time. Note that Elex Learning follows Daylight Savings time, so you will need to adjust your local times when North America “springs forward” or “falls back.”

Each class is online, live, synchronous, and on camera in order to create the in-person vibe of a supportive group of students learning together.

Classes are held on Zoom and are NOT recorded to preserve privacy.

Parents/guardians/caregivers are welcome and encouraged to observe any and all classes.

These courses are not graded and are designed for all students to improve their knowledge, understanding and skills through participation in the class activities and homework. None of our courses have tests or exams. No official grade or credit will be given for these courses.

With the exception of the Writing courses, all courses require minimal writing. This writing can be done by hand, typed, voice to text or other adaptive tech. or scribed by another. For any course with reading homework, the reading may be done conventionally or via an audiobook (if one exists) or read aloud.

Once you have submitted the Registration form, you will be sent a Confirmation email within 72 hours. Payment instructions will be sent by the class instructor. Your place in the class is only reserved once payment has been received in full. Payment must be received within 72 hours of the invoice in order to reserve your spot. Spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis (based on order of payment received). Note: Students currently enrolled in a course will have priority registration over new students. Full Registration details are on the Registration form.

Books and materials:

Tuition fees do not include books, printouts and other materials. Visit each course’s page for details about required books and materials. The 2025-2026 English Lit classes require the student to have a PAPER copy of all written texts with them in class for the whole year once they have been covered in class. (Library books and digital books will not be sufficient for this).

Waitlist:

If the class you want is full, join the waitlist!

Simply fill out the registration form and specify in the Comments section: “Please add me to the WAITLIST for X Course”. You will be invoiced for the tuition if a spot becomes available and you will have 72 hours to pay in full to confirm your spot in the course. If fewer than 72 hours are left before the start of the course, you will be notified of the deadline by which to pay to confirm your spot.  We will do our best to accommodate everyone, including opening another class section if possible.

Refunds:

We are happy to discuss our courses with you to ensure that there is a good match between our offerings and the student. Please email us with as many questions as you need to feel confident in the fit. We will do our best to give you everything you need to make a decision. We would also be happy to arrange to speak with you by phone or over Zoom if that would be helpful. Clear expectations and understandings of what is involved create the best learning environment in order to ensure a good fit for all. It is critical that students choose to participate in the course.

We therefore make ourselves available for these conversations to ensure that students (and their adults) can make an informed decision about registering ahead of time. As our classes are low ratio with a maximum of 6-12 participants per class, once you register and confirm your spot that information is counted on for the continued planning of the course.

As such, our Refund Policy is as follows:

A full refund is provided only if the class is cancelled due to insufficient enrolment.

FULL YEAR AND SEMESTER 1 COURSES: TERMS AND CONDITIONS

A full refund is provided only if class is cancelled due to insufficient enrolment. A 50% refund (minus any transaction fees, if applicable) will be issued if you inform Elex Learning of the withdrawal IN WRITING (by email) by August 3, 2025 for 2025-2026 Semester 1 and Full Year courses.

No refunds will be provided after August 3, 2025 for 2025-2026 Semester 1 and Full Year courses.

If a student is removed from a course due to breach of the Code of Conduct, a refund will not be issued.

Registration is complete and your student’s spot is reserved only when payment has been received.

SEMESTER 2 COURSES: TERMS AND CONDITIONS

A full refund is provided only if class is cancelled due to insufficient enrolment. A 50% refund (minus any transaction fees, if applicable) will be issued if you inform Elex Learning of the withdrawal IN WRITING (by email) by January 2, 2026 for a 2025-2026 Semester 2 course.

No refunds will be provided after January 2, 2026 for 2025-2026 Semester 2 courses.

If a student is removed from a course due to breach of the Code of Conduct, a refund will not be issued.

Registration is complete and your student’s spot is reserved only when payment has been received.

Class Requirements:

Students require a quiet, calm location from which to participate in class – even if they have a headset.

Students will require reliable high speed internet on a computer that handles Zoom, as well as a web cam, microphone and a keyboard. Please make sure that they have the ability to screen share in Zoom. Students may not use a virtual background during class, as the flicker triggers neurological symptoms in those susceptible. Don’t worry, we understand about messy rooms!

Secular and Diverse:

At Elex Learning, we respect and embrace each individual’s unique expression of humanity: their age, shape, size, colour, sexual orientation, gender identity, faith, neurodiversity, etc. Our courses are taught from a secular perspective. Religion is only discussed from a secular perspective and only as it arises in relation to an author’s or character’s background, or to the historical or literary significance of the work or time period in question.

Each student and their adult must fill out and sign our Code of Conduct and email it back when they submit their Registration form.

Our one rule at Elex Learning is Respect: respect for ourselves, respect for each other (students and teacher), and respect for the class environment.

Under the umbrella of respect, we make sure to give each other the space to speak and be heard; we listen when others are speaking; we give the class our full attention – we do not hold side conversations in the chat; we keep our phones off and other tabs closed unless we are using them for class. We practice using respectful language when disagreeing with each other. Cyberbullying (definition here: https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/ntnl-scrt/cbr-scrt/cbrbllng/prnts/cbrbllng-en.aspx)  of any kind is strictly forbidden and will result in immediate expulsion with no refund.

Privacy Notice:

Both the Registration form and Code of Conduct require permission to share first names and email addresses with the members of a given class so that they or their adults are able to organize to connect learners outside of class time if they so desire. Class emails will be sent using cc: (not bcc:). All of the teen classes are encouraged to create an independent online group where they can connect outside of class. The –Ology classes have created a joint Discord group for themselves. We are not on the Discord groups, but we have established a process for students to communicate any concerns with us as they arise.

Missed Classes:

These classes replicate an in-person learning environment and as such are not recorded. If you unavoidably miss class, a brief overview will be provided and we will attempt to ensure that the student has what they need to stay abreast of the class. Provision for planned extended absences will need to be agreed upon in advance and may involve additional fees.  Permission will only be given on a case by case basis, as writing up learning units for self-study or parent facilitated study create considerable extra work for the teacher.

Technical issues on the student’s side are not the responsibility of Elex Learning and no refunds will be issued for classes or parts of classes missed due to technical issues. You can help avoid issues by ensuring that the student’s device works well on Zoom using the internet connection that they are planning to use, with the camera/microphone/keyboard that they will be using. While we are happy to help you troubleshoot outside of class time, we are not able to stop class to help a student who is experiencing technical issues, so please ensure that there is an adult nearby to assist.

While it is rare, in the case that the teacher is sick, has a family emergency, or technical issues that prevent the delivery of the class, we will do everything to let you know as soon as we can and will make arrangements to provide a make up class if necessary. In the event that the course can no longer be offered due to a long-term, serious disruption such as long-term illness, we will provide a prorated refund of all tuition fees as soon as we are able to do so.
