Writing 2:
Creative Writing and Academic Paragraphs

ages 9-12 (gr.4-7)
Full Year - 32 week Course
PRE-REQUISITE: Completion of Writing 1

Course Description:

Join us as we learn to craft strong paragraphs using The Writing Revolution progression and support each other in creative writing projects that emerge from each student’s imagination. This course is only open to those who have completed Writing 1: Creative Writing and Academic Sentences or the equivalent and will pick up where Writing 1 leaves off.

Rather than exploring writing technique and creative writing each week, we will be alternating weeks. There will also be a text-based, asynchronous writing workshop running in the background throughout. This new model will free up more class time to truly provide each other with constructive feedback on each other’s creative works while still having the time we need to work on our academic paragraph writing skills.

The homework amount should stay about the same. Under this new model, they will have two weeks to do their Paragraph Apprenticeship practice as well as a weekly Creativity Lab Mission to be posted on the writing workshop discussion board. The time we’ve freed up by only doing one Apprenticeship assignment every two weeks will be balanced out with reading the five pages that explain the Creativity Lab Missions each week; reading each other’s posts; and providing constructive written feedback on a few posts each week.

On odd-numbered weeks, class will focus ONLY on academic writing practice and on even-numbered weeks, class will discuss ONLY their creative works. In order not to lose the delight and benefits of weekly creative writing workshops, there will be an ongoing, asynchronous writing workshop with required participation.

This class requires EITHER co-registration in English Lit: Authors OR additional reading and watching assignments (see below).

Asynchronous Weekly Creativity Lab Missions:

I am searching for a platform that will work best for our group to use as an ongoing asynchronous creative writing workshop. I am currently considering Google Classroom and Canvas, among other options. Whatever I find that will be most conducive to this will definitely require students to have their own account on the platform.
