What makes a person “good”? Why do different cultures tell the same stories? What is consciousness? Is color really there?
What is Humanity? is an integrated humanities course that dives into the “Big Questions” of life. Instead of studying history as a list of dates, we study it as a series of human choices. By blending Philosophy, Ethics, Culture, Anthropology, and Psychology, students will explore how human thought (how do we think anyway?) has shaped the world and individuals. We will start with the self and expand outwards to explore various interactions and types of thought. This course emphasizes critical thinking, Socratic discussion (lots of questions!), and “perspective-taking”—the superpower of seeing (how does sight work?) the world through someone else’s eyes.
