Micronations: Create a Country

Full Year - 32 week Course

Course Description:

Join us as each student invents their own country to explore physical and human geography, including economy, government, language, climate, landscape, and more through a wide range of projects. We will be using Micronations: Invent Your Own Country and Culture by Kathy Ceceri as our guide. The course will culminate in a World Fair of Micronations on the last day of class. Here’s how Ceceri sums up the journey we will take together:

“You’ve learned how geography and climate and landscape affect culture and economy and infrastructure. You’ve thought about what your country’s theme and values are and what kinds of things are popular among your citizens. …You’ve created your country’s symbols, learned how to write your own important documents, made stamps and money, and invented your own language.” (Ceceri 114)

Each week, students will be assigned a few pages to read and a project to complete. The projects will be based on both the reading and our deeper dives into the material together. We will start each class by sharing the week’s completed project followed by exploring and discussing the new concepts from the reading.
