Intro to Physical Geography

ages 10-13 (gr.5-7)

Course Description:

Map and design the contours of your own imaginary world modelled on Earth’s geography. We will be exploring latitude, longitude, landforms, map projections, map reading, scale, plate tectonics and more.

Day: Monday

Time: 2:30pm-3:30pm ET

Semester 1 Dates: September 12, 2022-January 30, 2023 (16 weeks, no classes Sept 26, Oct 10, Nov 21, Dec 26, Jan 2) 

Note: By special request, Weeks 1-3 will be Fridays at 4pm ET. (Friday, Sept 16,  Sept 23, and Oct 7. Then we will shift back to the originally scheduled class days and times with Week 4:  Monday, Oct 17th 2:30pm-3:30pm ET)

Required Homework:

Minimal homework mostly requiring occasional printing. A couple of the weeks will have approx. 30min of homework drawing in lines of latitude and longitude or creating labels, etc.

Course Materials:

Printouts – to be supplied digitally as the course unfolds

An orange will be required for 2 of the weeks (if allergic, please let me know)

A thumbtack (or a small screw or nail)

A cookie sheet or a tray (for 1 week only – when we peel the orange) 

Permanent marker

30cm / 12 inch ruler

Protractor

Coloured pencils or markers

A couple of pieces of light blue construction paper

(Typical school supplies: white paper, pencil, eraser, scissors, gluestick/tape, etc.)
