Exploring History through Documentaries

ages 9-12 (gr.4-6)

Course Description:

“How do people, places, and ideas change over time and space?” ”What defines a documentary as a documentary?”  Each week, travel to a different time period through a variety of carefully curated documentaries and come prepared to discuss these essential questions while helping to build our digital timeline of events. We will deepen our understanding through a wide range of activities including: exploring the science behind the history, investigating the stories of individuals from the time period, discussing film technique, and examining primary sources.

Time: 1pm-2pm ET

Semester 2 Dates: February 10, 2022 June 23, 2022 (16 weeks – No classes: Feb 24, Apr 21, May 26, and Jun 2)

Required Homework:

Watch the assigned documentary every second week: 7 documentaries in total.

NOTE: for those with siblings in both age groups – the watch list will be the same for both classes, enabling the family to easily watch together if desired

Course Materials:

All the documentaries are available for free on YouTube in Canada. It is possible that in other viewing jurisdictions they may need to be sought in other places such as Amazon Prime, or watched via a VPN.
